Porthcawl Pavilion Theatre

Posted by
Philip (South Wales, United Kingdom) on 12 October 2010 in Documentary & Street and Portfolio.

I remember going to this theatre when I was young to see a pantomime (Stan Stennett for anyone brought up in south Wales - he's still going strong at 86!!). This theatre has always had questionmarks about its future even over 30 years ago - it still seems to continue. It is a bit of an iconic landmark now in the area. It is on the promenade in Porthcawl town centre facing the Bristol Channel. Nice aspect. I'll show a photo of the coast tomorrow.

What a happy toy-town look this has . . hope the theater can continue but it is so tough in these overload times of entertainment.

There aren't enough of these theatres left now.

@Curly: I know. It is thanks to the efforts of the council that it is. I wonder how long they can continue in the current economic climate?

I'm kinda split in my vote on places like this..Half of me thinks that if the place can't sustain itself, it should go. The other half thinks that maybe we have some sort of duty to keep these places going regardless of their commercial success. There you go, schizophrenia in action!

...but where's Elvis?
Nice bit of nostalgia Phil! (Stan Stennett did a concert at my school and I remember being dragged there by our Mam)

@Ted: Elvis has left the town....

I was to lazy to go along and try and find an Elvis. My wife thought it would be good fun but there you go!

The buiding is a precious piece of architecture, indeed! The town should not allow it to be closed down!
What I'm particularly attracted to are those street pillons showing directions.....what a quaint idea to paint them blue, decorate them with gold and even have the directions written in gold letters! I find that quite chic!
